Mr Coutts from Baradene College in Auckland visited France for two weeks to see the school we are partnered with in Chauny. He met five classes of students at Lycée Professionnel Gay Lussac and met with the teachers there to plan the project. He said it was a really great trip and he came back with photos to show us. The photos (above) are from his visit. Mr Coutts also looked at many places for us to visit next year when we will travel to France. We hope some of the students at Gay Lussac will...
During our French trip in April 2014 I discovered this wonderful photo exhibition in Le Marais, organised by la Marie de Paris - completely par hasard! Charles Lansiaux is a photographer whose pictures were purchased by la Bibliothèque...

Our first idea was to research using Columba College school magazines dating from 1915, when our school opened, to 1917. In these, we found the names of several soldiers with connections to our college.
A letter to the school community revealed several current students with family connections to those who fought in France during World War I. Our next step is to further research these soldiers and share this new information with our partner school in France.
Its been a whole month already. I have unfortunately been snowed under with school work and as much as I hate to admit it, Young Ambassadors has taken a bit of a backseat! I will make sure that this won’t happen too often and that I keep chipping away at my project.
Over the past week I have been getting in contact with local papers to promote the sharedhistories site and Young Ambassadors trip. I am hoping that they will get back in contact with me soon so I can share what we...
Firstly, thank you to everyone for all the help and support I have received so far. The amount of positive feedback and support I’ve had from students, teachers, schools and my local community has been overwhelming and it’s a privilege to be representing you all!
For me, the last few weeks have been pretty busy, as my Young Ambassador’s Project has started to get into full swing. Following my article in The Southland Times, I had an incredible response from people in my...
We are starting to work on our book project and classes in English, French, German, Art and History will be busy over the next two terms getting work on our focus completed. We are going on a month long tour to France starting Wednesday April 9th and we will be visiting the NZ war graves and Somme battlefields to visit the graves of former PNBHS Old Boys who died in the Great War serving NZ. This will also form the basis of some of our project work with our partner school in Hirson.
We have been doing a lot of prep work for this. We have our inquiry focus questions and from that have decided that the first steps will be on the focus of pacifism before WWI, conscientious objectors and opposition to conscription. These first steps will be heavily scaffolded with research booklets and specific tasks. Here is the focus of the students inquiry. I think that as the students put together work they can report their progress via blogposts:
